The organizers of the Belgian Grand Prix have launched a bid to keep the race until 2016. Since discussions about the returning French Grand Prix emerged, the future of an annual Belgian race was jeopardized as the plans were to let the races alternate. However, with the election of Francois Hollande as France’s new president, Belgian Grand Prix organizers took the opportunity to propose their bid, as the president has already earlier expressed his doubts over supporting a French Formula 1 race in time of financial difficulties in the country.
Andre Maes, Chief Executive of Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, said: “The election has changed things. It has become clear to us the French are no longer interested in alternating so we have put a proposal to Bernie Ecclestone.”
