F1 cost-cutting plans on a dead end

GPNow

The proposals to cut costs in Formula 1 are under threat as the deadline of 30 June has passed. These plans were to cut excessive costs from teams in means of drivers and equipment and would help the smaller teams (who have a lower budget) to become more equal to the others. However, with only a few teams actually supporting the proposal it seems it was never actually taken seriously.

They even face further complications as Williams Team Principal Sir Frank Williams has said to be against the proposal. He said: “I am against any kind of interference. I do not want any third-party interference with one’s business; to have people sneaking around wanting to check this and that. Williams is not pleading for more restrictions. But I have said many times that we have to control driver costs.”

Though Lotus Team Principal Eric Boullier is seemingly also not fully behind the strict cost cuts, he is a little more supportive towards the idea than his colleague at Williams. Boullier said: “It is good that everybody in the paddock understands that we need to be thinking carefully about the future of F1. But we definitely need to take the right decision and we definitely do not need to rush into a decision that we might regret. We are all in favor of making F1 better, more sustainable and having a long term plan. Cost-cutting is part of the strategy, but we need to do it consciously.”

Now that the 30 June deadline is over, any team in favor of the proposal needs unanimous support from the other teams to let the plans go ahead. This does not seem like a realistic scenario as many of the bigger teams are against it and now also Williams.

He said: “There are 12 teams and each operates in different circumstances. We have several manufacturer teams. One of them is Ferrari, who seem to have a great deal of money and who are in effect subsidized. But that is fine; they are Ferrari. They are the core of Formula 1 and that is how it should be.”
