F1 Monaco GP: Not just another controversy

Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher: Conflict of interest?

This season of F1 has been nothing less than a thriller. With a lot more races still in store, no one can predict a winner just yet. In the last race which took place on the 16th May 2010. The Monaco GP was all about the Red Bull. With Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel standing 1 and 2 respectively and winning heavy points for their team.

Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher: Conflict of interest?

Amongst all this triumph there was a controversy that steamed up between drivers Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. Schumacher was handed a penalty of 20 seconds for over taking driver Alonso under the influence of the safety car as a result of which Schumacher was pushed to the 12th position as opposed to the 6th position where he had finished.

But, there is definitely more to this controversy than what meets the eye. This controversy takes everyone back to the rivalry between Michael and Damon Hill.

Damon Hill happened to be one of the stewards on the panel when Michael was inflicted with the penalty. However, before the race Damon Hill the 1996 winner of F1 said that his animosity towards Michael would not interfere with the decision making. When asked about his involvement in the latest race he was found telling the reporters, “…people have to make decisions based on the analysis of right and wrong, irrespective of who those people are.”

Meanwhile, Schumacher stuck to what he said during the post race conference saying, “Our understanding was that the safety car, in track clear, which means back to race and so I went for it and overtook Alonso.” While, we all have our own opinions on this topic it is hard to stay away from the fact that this one could be more than just another controversy.
