F1 penalty points before the British GP: 5 biggest delinquents

The F1 penalty points were implemented to maintain the driving standards of the sport above a certain threshold. Drivers such as Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado in the early 2010s were repeat offenders, and the French driver was even banned from a race for the collision he caused in the Belgian GP in 2012.

Because of this, a more robust system was put in place to keep the drivers in check. Since the introduction of the penalty system in 2014, no driver has been banned for racing conduct. However, some drivers have come perilously close to a ban.
