The F1 penalty points system helps keep the driving standards in the sport above a threshold level. It is a system in which penalty points are given on the basis of the transgressions of the drivers. These transgressions vary from dangerous driving, causing a collision, pushing a driver off track, etc. These points have an expiry period of one year, and hence they stay on a driver's quota for that period.
Any driver who ends up with more than 12 F1 penalty points gets a race ban. Since the inception of the system, we're yet to see a driver face a race ban, even though Pierre Gasly came very close to it in 2023.
