The F1 penalty points system has been implemented to keep driving standards above a certain threshold. For every transgression, which varies from driving dangerously on the track to pushing another driver off the track, penalty points are given to the drivers.

These F1 penalty points stay with the drivers for 12 months before they are removed. If a driver accumulates more than 12 points during this period, he faces a race ban. Going into the Monaco GP race weekend, we have 5 drivers who are on the edge of a race ban.
