Fernando Alonso believes Mercedes to trump at Monaco

Two-time World Champion, Fernando Alonso believes that Mercedes GP is the team to beat in this year’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The Brackley-based outfit head into the Circuit de Monte Carlo with three successive pole positions. They’ve also shown good pace in Monaco in previous years and many believe they could carry it on this year as well.

“They (Mercedes) will arrive as favourites for Monaco,” said Alonso.

“They’ve been on pole position for the last three races, they were on pole last year with Michael’s (Schumacher) lap, so it would be a surprise if they weren’t on pole position in Monaco,” the Spaniard added.

“And it’s more difficult to overtake in Monaco, so maybe they can keep good positions for longer.“

Meanwhile, Red Bull driver, Mark Webber seconds Alonso’s opinions.

“I was running around and I was thinking – because obviously Michael put it on pole – that it (last year’s car) must have been pretty good (in Monaco),” he told reporters. “So I really hope that’s the same this year.“
