FIA to investigate Mercedes tyre test

Race Stewards in Monaco have opted to pass a report to the FIA in terms of the protest lodged by Red Bull and Ferrari following Mercedes‘ test in Barcelona with Pirelli.

Ahead of yesterday’s Monaco Grand Prix, both teams lodged protests against Mercedes after it was revealed earlier that the German team had carried out three days of testing with the Italian tyre manufacturer straight after the recent Spanish Grand Prix.

Pirelli claims that it is written into its contract that it can call on the services of teams if it wishes to carry out testing in relation to safety concerns. Both parties claim to have had the approval of the FIA.

While Mercedes Ross Brawn insists that the tyres used for much of the test were for 2014, and that at no time did his team have details of exactly what rubber it was using, this cut no ice with at least two rival teams.

Having heard from representatives of Pirelli and Mercedes, as they investigated an alleged breach of Article 22.4 h of the FIA Formula One Sporting regulations (Track and Wind Tunnel Testing), the stewards in Monaco confirmed that they will write a report to the FIA who may bring the matter before the International Tribunal.
