Formula 1 final race worth double points from 2014

New rules are set to increase the excitement in F1

F1 is set to introduce a number of rule changes from 2014. Some of them are a change in engine capacity from 2.4L V8 to 1.6L V6, increase in the capacity of KERS and a possibility of drivers requiring to take a minimum of two pit stops.

FIA has now decided to introduce a change in the points system. From 2014 onwards, the final race which in 2014 is Abu Dhabi on November 23 will be worth double the points that a normal race would have.

This means that the winner at Abu Dhabi will receive 50 points instead of 25, the runner up would receive 36 instead of 18 and so on.FIA believes that this would ‘maximise focus on the championship until the end of the campaign’.

Had this been introduced earlier, Fernando Alonso would have won the 2012 Championship while Felipe Massa would have won his first ever championship ahead of Lewis Hamilton in 2008.

The double points system has been unanimously agreed by F1 Strategy Group and the Formula One Commission when they met at Paris.

Other changes that have been agreed upon are -

1. Driver will now choose a number between 2 and 99 and will now be kept for their entire career instead of being changed each season. The number 1 however, is kept reserved for the current F1 world champion if he chooses to use it

2. A cost cap will be introduced from Januar 2015. This will be decided in more detail following coming meetings of FIA authorities.

3. There will be a five second penalty for minor infringements.
