George William Russell is a British racing driver who competes in Formula One for Mercedes in the No. 63 car. He was a member of the Mercedes Junior Team from 2017 to 2021 before debuting in Formula One at the Australian Grand Prix, partnering with Robert Kubica in Team Williams. Russell’s smooth driving style led him to substitute for Lewis Hamilton at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, and later on, he replaced Valtteri Bottas at Mercedes to partner Lewis Hamilton. Russell attended Wisbech Grammar School but switched to homeschooling to devote more time to racing. At seven, Russell started driving karts, influenced by his older brother Benjy, a competitive kart racer and the 2007 Super 1 National Kart Champion in the Rotax Max category. In 2010, Russell moved to the Rotax Mini Max category from the British Open, where he became the Super One British champion, Formula Kart Stars British champion, and won the Kartmasters British Grand Prix.
In 2014, Russell debuted in the single-seater Formula Renault 2.0 Alps championship for Koiranen GP. In the same year, he competed in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship with the then-defending champions Lanan Racing and won the championship that year. Following his title win, he tested a GP3 car with Arden Motorsport. 2018 saw Russell as a driver for the ART Grand Prix for the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship. Russell was also confirmed as the Mercedes’ reserve driver. His first Formula One car experience happened when he completed a test in the McLaren MP4-26 at Silverstone Circuit. The 2014 BRDC F4 Championship was Russell’s first championship win ever, queuing the 2017 GP3 Series, and then the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship, becoming the fifth driver to win the Formula 2 championship in their rookie season, and one of only three drivers to win both GP3 and Formula 2 championships in their rookie seasons. He has been awarded on multiple occasions including- the 2014 McLaren Autosports BRDC Award, the BRDC SuperStar, and the 2024 Lorenzo Bandini Trophy.
