The two Mercedes drivers Hamilton and Rosberg topped the opening session of the German Grand Prix this weekend. Hamilton topped the session with a 1.31.754 followed by his teammate just over two tenths behind.
Mark Webber posted the third best time in this session. He was over a second behind the Hamilton. Webber’s teammate and home hero, Vettel managed only the 8th place.
The surprise this session was Alonso not setting a time. His car was in the garage for most of the time with lots of work being carried out. He only managed two installation laps.
Another German, Adrian Sutil put in the 4th fastest time which was just a fraction behind Webber’s time.
Looking at the race pace, it looked like the two Mercedes cars were on top with consistent lap times on old tyres.
Today the weather was cool and is expected to increase over the next two days. The teams and drivers will make the most of the remaining practice sessions to get an idea about the drop off times in order to find the perfect strategy for Sunday’s 60 lap race.
