The Hockenheim track has been adjusted for the German F1 Grand Prix this weekend. The changes have been made at Turn one, in order to deter drivers from running wide and gaining an advantage.
In the last Hockenheim race in 2010, Felipe Massa took the lead after using the run-off area. In other previous years, drivers often ran wide at the first turn as well. Most of the time this happened in the opening lap where after they gained points. They used the run-off zone and drove back on track as soon as the artificial grass strip ended.
In order to prevent drivers to take a short cut, the three-metre wide strip has been extended for this year’s Grand Prix. Now, drivers will have to cross the strip when they run wide and will lose time when they rejoin.
