Former F1 driver Nico Rosberg was not thrilled with Daniel Ricciardo's post-race celebration after the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2016. The former Mercedes driver expressed his disgruntlement in the press conference after the race when asked about Ricciardo's famous 'shoey' celebration, which involves the Australian driver pouring champagne into his shoe and drinking it after he won the race.
After the race at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Ricciardo handed everyone on the podium, including Rosberg, his shoe to drink from. In the press conference featuring Ricciardo, Max Verstappen, and Rosberg, a journalist asked about him making a face after drinking from the shoe, to which the German said:
"I hope he does not win any more races this year"
The Malaysian GP was won by Ricciardo, followed by teammate Verstappen in the runner-up spot, and the Mercedes driver closing out the podium places.
Although he didn't enjoy the shoey, Rosberg won the Drivers Championship that year. He also broke teammate Lewis Hamilton's winning streak by securing the crown with 385 points, beating the Briton by five points. During Rosberg's time in the sport, he came close to winning the Drivers Championship twice before, with second-place finishes in 2014 and 2015.
The 2016 season would also mark the German driver's final in the sport, with him retiring after his championship win. Since then, he has spent time with his family, with the birth of his second daughter happening soon after his retirement. He has also been involved in charitable projects and manages multiple racing organizations.
Nico Rosberg is still in and around the world of F1 as a pundit and will return for the 2025 season commentating for Sky Sports.
Nico Rosberg looked for his dad on the trophy after his 2016 Championship Win
Nico Rosberg beat Lewis Hamilton by five points with his second-place finish at Abu Dhabi to take the Drivers Championship title in 2016. His father, Keke Rosberg, also took home the title 34 years earlier, in 1982.
Speaking in an interview after his championship win and a few days before the prize gala, Rosberg talked about how he got a sneak peek at the Championship trophy and the first thing he did - was look for his father, via SkySports:
"The first thing I did really was to look where my dad [1982 champion Keke] is. "
"That's really something very special to me that we both achieved the same thing and that we both have our name on this special trophy. That's so cool."
By achieving this feat, the Rosbergs become the second-ever father-son duo to have won world championships in F1. The only other duo to have accomplished this were Graham and Damon Hill.
