Greater Noida, Oct 28 – Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone Sunday said the second Formula One Indian Grand Prix was a step-up from last year and the event’s organisation would only improve in the future.

“The conditions have improved immensely from last year and it could only get better from here on. It was not easy to build a circuit in a place like this and credit should go to the organisers (Jaypee),” said Ecclestone at the Buddh International Circuit paddock.

Asked about the dip in spectator interest, he said: “The first time the excitement is always high, second it goes down. Third year is what is important as there is something to worry if the interest keeps on falling. And we have stiff competition from cricket.”

Ecclestone, who celebrated his 82nd birthday Sunday, said the annual event has helped India’s image as a sporting destination.

“It is a matter of pride for any country hosting the Olympics. Similarly, holding a F1 race also helps in building the image. The circuit is one of the best in the world,” he said.

Bernie had earlier proposed two races in India only to retract from his statement.
