Formula One World champion Sebastian Vettel has said that he will need a couple of weeks into the off-season to completely sink into the enormity of records that he made this season.
Vettel clinched his fourth consecutive World Championship with three races to spare and then went on to win those three, keeping his cent percentage record since August intact. He also matched Michael Schumacher’s record of 13 wins in a season and piled up a record haul of 397points.
“Well, I think it is very very difficult for me to realize probably now and in the next couple of weeks what we have achieved again, and in particular this year at the end of the season,” Vettel said.
“It’s sad that this year comes to an end, this kind of thing comes around maybe once in your life. Nobody expects it to continue or to happen again because we all know how exceptional it is. Probably we don’t understand right now what we have achieved but it doesn’t come by just like this,” he added.
With his run of 9 wins in a row, the German equaled the tall of former star Alberto Ascari but Vettel played down the feat and said that the times were completely different.
“I think in terms of a certain record with Alberto Ascari you can’t really compare it, it’s at a completely different time. If you consider the fact that in the fifties the races were much longer and there were a lot of things that were breaking down, much more than nowadays where it’s very professional, reliability is exceptionally good for everybody. I think his record still stands out a lot,” he said.
