Lando Norris has pulled back the curtain on a very contrarian approach to racing, where he never had the unmatched belief that he was going to make it to F1. In general, when any Formula 1 driver is questioned if they ever doubted that they would reach the highest echelon of motorsports, their response exudes a certain level of belief that they had throughout their career.
More often than not, drivers like Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, and others have admitted that there was a certain level of belief that they had in themselves to reach the top level of motorsports.
Lando Norris, however, seems to have a rather contrasting approach to the sport in terms of his thought process. The 24-year-old revealed that his mindset was never about having the belief that he'll make it to F1. On the contrary, he was more focused on ensuring his incremental improvement over the years. As quoted by "RacingNews365", Norris said,
"For me, I never had the belief I'd be in Formula 1. As much as all the superstars in the world are like: 'You have to have so much belief in yourself to do this', I don't think you do at all, to be honest. I never did."
He added,
"And, I mean, I've only won one race, but I'm still here, in Formula 1. It's more just the work behind the scenes, I think matters more than anything else. I've worked hard to be here, but I've not believed hard to be here - that kind of thing."
Lando Norris opens up on how it's about figuring out what works
Lando Norris opened up on how his approach is all about figuring out what works for him. He's consistently improving and trying to find the best combination for him.
Even talking about how he can be a bit hard on himself when it comes to being critical about things, Lando Norris said that it was all a part of the process and he would be unhappy if he felt that there was something that he could do better but didn't. He said (via the aforementioned source):
"Really, I think it's just trying to figure yourself out, know what works best for you and maximise that. I feel like that's what I'm doing. I'm still figuring it out along the way."
He added,
"And maybe a better balance [to how hard he is on himself] at times is correct, because I definitely don't want it to have a longer-term effect, like one race shouldn't affect five races. But I'm never going to come in and be pleased with under-delivering on my job. And I think that's how I'll always be."
Lando has been a very unique driver in many ways and it will be interesting to see how much evolution there is from a driver who will certainly be looking to clinch the second race win of his career.
