Lewis Hamilton is positive that a victory from his side will put him on par with Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, but also has gone on to admit that winning this weekend’s British Grand Prix might be a little less likely.
Hamilton has an edge over Rosberg when it comes to the driver’s standings, but when it came down Mercedes’s chances of winning at the Monaco Grand Prix, it was Rosberg who delivered.
Even though Hamilton remains focused and driven to secure a victory, he also downplayed his chances at his home race this weekend.
Hamilton was quoted by Press Association Sport as saying: “I need to get a win. But I’m not going to Silverstone thinking about the possibility of winning, not after witnessing the pace of Ferrari and Red Bull in Canada. They were massively quick.”
“Sebastian [Vettel] was pulling away from me at a second per lap. We won’t have gained a second coming into this race, but we can definitely beat the rest,” he added.
The main concern for the Mercedes team has been the issue of tyre delamination, as they ended up finishing in lowly positions even after taking pole.
“We’ve made a small step in progress, but I don’t think we’ve cured it,” Hamilton said. “Silverstone will be a real challenge for us, so fingers crossed it’s not going to be a problem, but we’ll have to see. Tyre degradation could be an issue. Long run [pace] is going to be a challenge because there are lots of high-speed corners.”
