Banbury-based Marussia are set to use either Ferrari or Mercedes engines in 2014, admitted Andy Webb, the chief executive of Marussia.
Presently, they are using the engines made by Cosworth, which is expected to leave F1 before the start of the new turbo V6 era. This has prompted them to go for the above mentioned alternatives next year.
Renault, which doesn’t want to add any team on its customer list further, is believed to be in talks with Toro Rosso over this issue. Marrusia are reported to be opting between Ferrari or Mercedes engines, both of which are Renault products.
Webb said, “It’s obvious that with the departure of Cosworth then we can choose between Ferrari and Mercedes. We’ll talk with both.”
He further added, “It is clear that the price will be an important factor, because the cost will be significantly higher than the current engines. And we need to make sure we choose the right partner. I hope to be able to announce our decision in the next four weeks.”
2013 Marussia driver Jules Bianchi‘s close connections with Ferrari is another reason why they may choose the Italian marque for the deal.
Assuring of a quick decision on the issue, Webb said, “The 2014 car is already in the wind tunnel. We have already seen a lot of data on the requirements for the engines in 2014. We have not chosen a partner yet, but we have a lot of information.”
“Of course, a quick decision on the engine would help. Preferably by the end of April,” he concluded.
