McLaren discovers errors in Button’s car

McLaren Operations Director Simon Roberts has revealed that the team has discovered the errors in Jenson Button’s car that caused the many technical problems with his car. The Brit has struggled in many races with his car, while teammate Lewis Hamilton has had great results so far. The big difference between their cars was shown in the Canadian Grand Prix where Hamilton took the victory while Button was left in sixteenth. According to Roberts, the team has now found the slight difference between the cars.

Roberts: “I think Canada was very interesting because fundamentally we run the same car for both drivers and they both have the same parts available. Although we allow them to adapt the set-up to their driving style, clearly we had something fundamentally different in terms of the tire performance and car performance. We have been able to actually capitalize on that and there has been a huge amount of work back at the factory analyzing the data and just checking that everything was as we thought it was.”

“We are pretty sure at the moment that there was nothing untoward with Jenson’s car and actually nothing fundamentally wrong with the set-up. But in the subtlety of these cars at the moment there are differences and I think, going to Valencia, we are quite optimistic. I think we can have a slightly different way of getting Jenson’s car under him for qualifying and for the race.”

However, Roberts stressed that the differences are very minimal and no drastic change to Button’s performance should be expected. He did not reveal what the differences were.
