Mercedes will change the component of its DRS which caused Michael Schumacher’s retirement from the Canadian Grand Prix. It was his fifth retirement from the seven races so far in the 2012 season. While Schumacher had to retire several times this season due to technical problems, his team-mate Nico Rosberg hasn’t had any problems so far and was able to finish every race.
Schumacher’s problem during the Canadian Grand Prix was that his rear wing flat became stuck open. The problem could not be fixed quickly during the race and therefore he had to retire. “The problem was a hydraulic coupling,” Team Principal Ross Brawn said. “They have a locking system and the locking system seemed to have fatigued and allowed the coupling to come undone. It’s not a problem we’ve seen before and we’re going to change the design to make sure there is less likelihood of it happening.”
“I think the lack of reliability with Michael has been a huge frustration to everyone here because our standards are extremely high. We haven’t changed any of our procedures’ or approach, haven’t taken any shortcuts and haven’t let the system slip in any way whatsoever, so it’s been highly frustrating that we’ve had the problems.”
“Whilst I don’t believe in fate too much, it’s been peculiar that we’ve had one car that’s done every lap of every race, and then with Michael we’ve had three or four problems.”
If the technical problems did not occur in the races, it would be likely that Schumacher would be the leader of the drivers’ title. The German driver dropped out of third places in both China and Australia. Also, he was hit by Romain Grosjean in Malaysia. Monaco ended due to a loss of fuel pressure.
