Exactly 30 years ago, a Finn drove his Williams-Ford across the line to win the Monaco Grand Prix. Today, his son has gotten closer to following in the great Finn’s footsteps. Nico Rosberg grabbed pole at the Circuit de Monte Carlo ahead of Lewis Hamilton, rounding off an incredible Mercedes 1-2.
Throughout the entire qualifying, Red Bull and Lotus seemed like potential threats to Mercedes but, as they’ve shown all week, they came out on top. This is the 3rd successive pole position for the German driver and the 4th pole for the Mercedes. A personal record for Rosberg and an all-time record for the team as an individual constructor.
Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber finished 3rd and 4th to occupy the second lane. Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari‘s Fernando Alonso finished 5th and 6th. They’re followed by Sergio Perez, Adrian Sutil, Jenson Button and Jean-Eric Vergne to complete the top 10.
There weren’t any major accidents during the course of the qualifying sessions but the wet nature of the track made it hard enough for the drivers to be as cautious as possible.
Adrian Sutil, who had crashed during FP3, made it back on track and eventually finished 8th, an impressive feat by the Force India team.
Weather predictions state that tomorrow might be a wet affair which means Nico Rosberg has every chance to win the race following in the footsteps of his dad, Keke Rosberg.
