The Formula One teams are set to introduce a new pit technology in Singapore to avoid incidents like that of Mark Webber in Germany, where his tyre came off and struck a cameraman.
The FIA has enforced a regulation which stipulates that the teams must adopt the new system from the Singapore Grand Prix. The system is said to ensure that the wheel cannot come out free even if the nut isn’t fitted correctly.
“All cars, whilst under their own power, must be fitted with devices which will retain the wheel fastener in the event of it coming loose,” article 14.7 of the technical regulations stated.
McLaren have already tested their system at Spa and are set to use it next at Monza.
“We tried it on the car on Friday and we will probably put it on the car for Friday at Monza as well, It is a little bit different and, when you are operating with pit stops around two seconds in length, the most marginal things can make a big difference,” said McLaren sporting director Sam Michael.
The teams were made aware of the regulations before the Belgian Grand Prix and they have been working on the new system since. However, the teams are yet to race with the new system.
