Former F1 driver Mark Webber recently talked about working with Oscar Piastri on his journey through the single-seater motorsport series. Webber has been managing the fellow Australian youngster since his junior days.
Piastri has been performing brilliantly ever since he joined F1. In his first year, he scored 97 points in total and finished ninth. In the 2024 F1 season, he won his first race in Hungary and currently stands in fourth place with 167 points.
Speaking about working with Oscar Piastri, Mark Webber told "PlanetF1" that the youngster is well aware of what he needs to do for his future. He explained why he hates the word 'potential' and added that Piastri knows that action speaks louder than words.
“It’s been enjoyable working closely with him. He’s obviously a very special talent. He knows what’s right for the future, to continue to unleash that talent. Potential is a word I hate. Potential is whatever potential is, but you need to make sure that you go out and he knows actions speak louder than words and that’s how he operates,” Webber said.
The $10,000,000-worth former F1 driver also praised the McLaren driver's steep improvement from 2023 to 2024. He added how much experience he has gained up until now and the level he was consistently working at.
“So he’s had a very, very special start to his career. There’s so much experience on those first two or three rows, especially with just how sensitive the cars are now and how tight the times are, which is really a credit to him that he’s been able to hang out there, week in week out,” he added.
Oscar Piastri on how Mark Webber helped him move up in motorsport
Before the start of the 2024 F1 season, Oscar Piastri talked about various aspects of his racing career, including his mentor and manager, former F1 driver Mark Webber.
Speaking to Autosport, the young Aussie said that he usually receives a lot of advice from Webber. Piastri explained that Webber's past experiences are essentially what he could face in the future.
“It's mostly advice. His hindsight is my foresight in some ways. So, there's been plenty of occasions, especially in the beginning of the year, where he's come up with questions that haven't even entered my mind. He's just got that little bit of experience and added info that you can really learn a lot from and is useful. He’s still got a very keen eye for everything that I'm doing,” Piastri said.
Oscar Piastri has been managed by Webber since 2020. The youngster quickly moved up the F3 grid and won the junior championship in the same year. He then won the F2 championship in 2021. With the help of Webber, Piastri secured a reserve driver seat at Alpine in 2022 but later joined McLaren in 2023.
