F1 teams and drivers have already arrived at the Red Bull Ring for the upcoming Austrian GP. This race weekend will also feature the sprint format for the third time in the 2024 season.
Previously, at the Spanish GP, Max Verstappen clinched yet another race victory and extended his lead in the drivers' championship table. He was in a battle with McLaren's Lando Norris, who was also aiming to bag his second race win of his career. Eventually, the British driver finished in second place as he could not catch the defending world champion.
Meanwhile, Mercedes looked much stronger in Barcelona as Lewis Hamilton managed to secure P3 in qualifying and finish the race in the same position. This marks his first podium in the 2024 F1 season.
On the other hand, Ferrari experienced a dip in performance after they brought another major upgrade package to Spain. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finished the race in P5 and P6, respectively. They also had an on-track tussle that sparked a minor discord between them.
Coming into the Austrian GP, only five teams have brought new parts for their cars.
2024 F1 Austrian GP: List of upgrades
Mercedes
- Beam Wing (Performance)
Mercedes did not bring any new aerodynamic parts for the Spanish GP. However, they did bring some lighter parts to reduce the overall weight of the car. This worked in their favor as they were quick around Barcelona.
For Austrian GP, they only brought a new beam wing with a reduced camber to reduce local and floor loads. This will result in a decrease in downforce and drag.
Ferrari
- Cooling Louvres (Circuit Specific)
Ferrari brought a large upgrade package to the Spanish GP where they changed several floor and wing parts. In Austrian GP, however, they have introduced new cooling vents on the engine covers, particularly because of potential high temperatures at the Red Bull Ring.
McLaren
- Front Wing (Performance)
- Front Suspension (Performance)
It is safe to say that McLaren has one of the fastest cars on the 2024 grid. Lando Norris already won a race in Miami and was in contention for the race win in Canadian and Spanish GPs. The British team has developed a powerful machine for this season.
In the Austrian GP, McLaren brought a new front wing and front suspension system. Both of them will work in tandem to improve airflow around the front of the car.
Visa Cash App RB
- Rear Corner (Performance)
Visa Cash App RB struggled quite a lot at the 2024 F1 Spanish GP. Daniel Ricciardo finished P15 while Yuki Tsunoda ended up in P19.
Coming into Austrian GP, they only brought a new rear corner part, specifically a new rear brake drum with new winglets to improve airflow at the back of the car.
Sauber
- Beam Wing (Performance)
Sauber brought a new beam wing, which only has a single element. This would allow them to reduce drag and improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the car around the Red Bull Ring.
