The 2024 F1 Brazilian GP will see both the qualifying and the race being held on the same day after the qualifying session on Saturday was postponed due to heavy rain. The fifth sprint weekend of the season at the iconic Interlogos track has already seen three competitive sessions on Friday and Saturday.

After the completion of the Sprint race on Saturday which saw McLaren get a 1-2 with Lando Norris leading Oscar Piastri to the line, the track was hit with torrential rain. The FIA delayed the qualifying multiple times to give the track authorities as much time as possible to clear as much standing water before the beginning of the session.

However, despite the rain easing off slightly, the sport's governing body postponed the qualifying session to Sunday due to diminishing natural light. F1 has previously hosted qualifying and the race on the same day on multiple occasions, with the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix being the most recent one.

However, it might be tough to get both sessions completed on the same day with rain on the horizon. As per Weather.com, below is the weather report for the qualifying and the main race at the 2024 Brazilian GP:

Sunday - Qualifying and Race

Forecast: Steady rain in the morning with clouds in the afternoon leading to showers.

Temperature: 22C/72F

Chance of precipitation: More than 90%

F1 CEO comments on postponing qualifying at the Brazilian GP

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said he was thankful for the great support from the fans despite torrential rain after the Sprint at the Brazilian GP on Saturday.

Speaking with F1.com, the Italian said:

“First of all let me once again reiterate the fact that these fans are incredible. We cannot control the weather as you know, and it’s a pity, but the conditions are not safe to drive. There is a problem also of light that will very soon hit the track so unfortunately that’s the situation we have to manage.”

Meanwhile, the FIA in a statement has detailed the reasons behind delaying Qualifying:

“The decision was taken due to the lack of visibility caused by the level of rain we have experienced in the past few hours. There is a lot of standing water on parts of the circuit which renders conditions unsafe.
"As much as we would all like to see competition on track, the safety of drivers, team members, volunteers, officials, and spectators is our main priority. A decision on a start time for qualifying tomorrow morning will be taken as soon as possible.”

The qualifying sessions will be conducted at 7:30 a.m. local time to set the grid for the main race later in the day, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. local time.
