The qualifying session for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza concluded with the McLarens locking up the front row. George Russell claimed the third-fastest lap, while the Ferrari drivers, racing on home soil, qualified fourth and fifth.

Lando Norris claimed his fourth pole position of the season in Italy, dominating the field in the MCL38. His teammate Oscar Piastri locked up the front row, leaving no room for the competitors. Although the Ferraris initially appeared to have claimed the second row, George Russell's Mercedes swiftly moved into third place.

Mercedes sandwiched both SF-24s as Lewis Hamilton took sixth place in the qualifying. Championship leader Max Verstappen struggled with balance issues during the qualifying session, resulting in a disappointing seventh-place start. His teammate, Sergio Perez, lined up in eighth position.

Alex Albon made the most of his Williams' straight-line speed to put himself in P9, with Nico Hulkenberg's Haas rounding up the top-10 for the main race on Sunday.

McLaren has been a formidable force in recent races. Norris converted his maiden pole position into a commanding victory at Zandvoort last weekend, outpacing Max Verstappen by a substantial margin of 22 seconds.

Their consistent performances have drawn them closer to Red Bull, and the team is now a serious contender for the Constructors' Championship.

Lando Norris talks about team orders after grabbing pole position at the 2024 F1 Italian GP

Lando Norris has so far grabbed five pole positions throughout his F1 career, with an impressive four of those coming this season alone. While the team is performing well at the top, they have faced issues with team orders.

Earlier during the Hungarian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri's pit strategy was altered, which saw him losing the lead to Norris. Subsequently, Norris was instructed to cede the position to his teammate, a decision that ignited tension within the team as he initially resisted the order. However, Norris eventually complied, slowing down to allow Piastri to secure his maiden Formula 1 victory.

Heading towards the main race of the Italian GP, Norris appears determined to avoid any further complications related to team orders. He has stated that his main goal is to race and bring the team a 1–2 finish.

"I want to race. That is what I am here to do. We have spoken about everything and have prepared for everything," Sky F1 quoted him as saying post the Italian GP qualifying session.
"If Oscar drives a better race and gets ahead, it is probably because he has done a better job than me. We know what is best for the team. We want a one-two as a team and working together is the best way of doing it," the 24-year-old said.

Red Bull's commanding lead at the top of the championship standings has been reduced to a mere 30 points, thanks to McLaren's impressive consistency. If McLaren can maintain this level of performance, they could pose a formidable challenge for the title.
