Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack claimed that he was 'flattered' regarding the speculation surrounding Adrian Newey's secret visit to the factory in Silverstone this week. The aero wizard has been linked with several teams on the grid after his departure from the Red Bull F1 team was announced a couple of months back.
Adrian Newey would leave the Austrian team in early 2025 after 19 years with the Milton-Keynes outfit, leading them to seven driver's championships and six constructors championships during his tenure.
He has been linked to Ferrari, Williams, Mercedes, and Aston Martin as the next possible destination in his illustrious career. It was rumored that he visited the new Aston Martin factory ahead of the Spanish GP in a secret visit with team members being told to leave the facility to keep the hush-hush nature of the visit.
However, speaking to the media in Barcelona, Mike Krack did not confirm the visit and termed it as 'rumors', but was nonetheless happy with the alleged link-up. He said:
"Rumors are rumors, a lot of people are talking about Aston Martin. That is a good thing. Maybe a couple of years ago, if we would have these names linked to our team, nobody would have taken it seriously. So we are very, very flattered about that. And I think it shows that the project is credible."
Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll give their take on Adrian Newey's alleged secret visit to Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso stated that he wasn't too bothered about the reports of Newey secreting visiting the new facilities in Silverstone and termed them as 'rumors'.
In his pre-race press conference, the two-time world champion addressed the reports and said:
"Yeah, I read the rumors, I read the news. But it's coming from the same source and the same websites of one week ago [saying] he was in Ferrari and it was the announcement at 12 o'clock before Canada race. So yeah, rumors are rumors."
While his teammate Lance Stroll was more upbeat about the prospect of Adrian Newey potentially joining Aston Martin, adding (via Motorsport.com):
“Well, you know, it's a super exciting factory. We have a young team, but a very exciting project. You know, wind tunnel, everything that you already know. That's very exciting about our team."
“Well, I think everyone in this paddock wants to meet Adrian Newey. I hear a lot of things, mainly from you guys. I mean, last week I heard he was going to Ferrari and now he's coming to us. Next week he's going to be going to Williams!"
Adrian Newey and all the other teams that he has been linked with have not made any official announcements regarding him joining them for the 2025 season and beyond.
