Adrian Newey's pet project at Red Bull, the 'RB17', was unveiled on day two of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, as promised earlier this season. The legendary aerodynamicist has been working day and night for the last couple of years to get the hypercar ready to present before the world.
Earlier this year, it was announced that the 65-year-old would leave the Red Bull paddock, having stopped his F1 duties altogether, and would be solely focused on working on the final phase of the RB17.
According to Red Bull's official website, the RB17 is a two-seater hypercar with a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, similar to an F1 car, and a semi-stressed mid-mounted V10 engine that could produce up to 15,000 rpm. The gearbox is in the rear of the hypercar and is made of carbon fiber.
It weighs less than 900 kg. The RB17 is touted to produce similar lap times as an F1 car with over 350km/h in top speed. Red Bull Advanced Technologies is responsible for each aspect of the car and will produce only 50 for now.
Adrian Newey could not hide his excitement for the hypercar and the completion of his pet project and said:
“I had been mulling around the idea to take on the challenge to design our very own Hypercar, from concept to delivery, for many years and it has been a magnificent project and journey. For it to finally be the day we pull the covers off and see the birth of the RB17, is truly remarkable.
"The RB17 Hypercar embraces everything we stand for: undeniable power, speed, and beauty. It is very adaptable in its abilities, and we made sure to design it as a two-seater so that the thrill of driving at F1 speeds can be enjoyed with a friend or partner.” he added.
Red Bull team boss gives his take on Adrian Newey's RB17
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner stated that Adrian Newey-designed RB17 was a mark of the team's 20-year legacy at the pinnacle of motorsport.
As quoted by the aforementioned source, he said:
"With 20 years of legacy in the world of F1 to draw from, and as a performance-centered organization, it only made sense for us to design our own Hypercar from the ground up."
"Combining technical innovation, achievement, and emotional appeal, the RB17 is a landmark car. I’m very proud of the Team and am delighted to see it make its world debut. We expect the RB17 to be a future classic.” he added.
The unveiling of the hypercar officially closes the Adrian Newey–Red Bull partnership that lasted for 19 years, which included seven driver's championships and six Constructor's Championship and numerous successful years with them.
