Alex Albon is reportedly looking to break away from his Williams contract despite rejecting offers from rival F1 teams in 2023.
Albon has been with Williams since the 2022 F1 season. While his multi-year contract has been reported to tie him down till the end of 2025, it is rumored that he is keen to break away from the team (according to ESPN, via PlanetF1).
Having raced for Red Bull earlier, the performance of the Williams will be a downfall to anyone, however, Albon has been rather loyal to the team.
It was reported earlier that two unnamed teams on the F1 grid approached Albon in 2023, but the Thai-British driver denied their offer. Being the only experienced driver of the team, his decision was positive news for the entire Williams crew, especially after James Vowles took over as their principal.
It has been expected that the team could perform well under the former Mercedes strategy director despite their poor showing in earlier seasons.
With Alex Albon's efforts and the team's relatively better performance, Williams climbed up from the bottom of the championship and finish seventh in the 2023 championship.
Alex Albon showed his commitment to Williams earlier in 2023 despite reports of him wanting to depart
During the mid-season period in 2023, Alex Albon was rumored to be approached by Ferrari. The driver denied the speculations, and also spoke about staying with Williams for a long time.
He said that he intends to stay with the team in the "long run," and would want to continue the journey with the team. Autosport quoted him as saying:
"Truthfully, I think you see it already now, where my main focus is with this team. You can see this isn't a short-term situation. I am here for the long run. And I'm really enjoying working with the team, being where I am."
He added:
"I do feel like we are on a journey. I do want to continue this journey. Let's see how these next few years unfold, but for now, I am very happy where I am."
Albon finished 13th in the 2023 championship, climbing up six positions from his 19th-place finish the previous season. This upward trajectory is a positive sign of Williams' development in the sport.
