Carlos Sainz put an end to speculation about his plans for 2025 by announcing his move to the Williams, joining forces with Alex Albon. The Spaniard announced his multi-year contract with the team, cheekily highlighting a commonality he shares with his future teammate.
The Ferrari driver was on the lookout for his next team for months, after Lewis Hamilton was announced to join the Italian team next season. Sainz's indecision had frozen the driver market, as multiple teams were interested in his services. He ultimately agreed to join the James Vowles-led Williams team.
Soon after announcing his move, Carlos Sainz wasted no time in highlighting that Williams' 2025 driver lineup was "appendix-less." Incumbent driver Alex Albon had surgery for appendicitis in September 2022, while Sainz recently underwent the procedure during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
The 29-year-old Spaniard wrote on his Instagram Stories:
"APPENDIX-LESS TEAM 😜"

Carlos Sainz made his F1 debut with Toro Rosso (now VCARB) in 2015, spending his rookie and sophomore season with them. Since then, he has gradually moved up the grid, joining competitive teams. He joined Renault mid-season in 2017, before moving to McLaren for a two-year stint in 2019-20.
Sainz joined Ferrari in 2021 and was paired with Charles Leclerc. Lewis Hamilton's bombshell move left Sainz on the hunt for a new team. With the driver lineups at the top teams confirmed, the three-time F1 race winner has decided to join Williams.
The Spaniard sees potential in Williams and is excited to join the historic team, aiming to bring the once-successful team back to where it belongs. He will team up with Alex Albon, who has been with Williams since 2022 and is currently in his third season. Logan Sargeant will be vacating his seat to make way for Sainz.
Williams F1 boss believes Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz will be a formidable pairing
James Vowles stated that their 2025 driver lineup will be one of the most formidable on the grid. He expressed confidence in Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon to lead the team through the 2026 regulations changes.
Speaking about Williams' future lineup, the team principal said in a press release:
"In Alex and Carlos we will have one of the most formidable driver lineups on the grid and with huge experience to guide us into the new regulations in 2026. Their belief in this organization’s mission demonstrates the magnitude of the work going on behind the scenes."
Vowles added:
"People should be in no doubt about our ambition and momentum as we continue our journey back to competitiveness – we are here, we are serious and with Dorilton’s backing we are investing in what it takes to return to the front of the grid."
Carlos Sainz has signed a multi-year deal with Williams and is expected to drive for the team in 2025 and continue through the 2026 regulation changes.
