Aston Martin F1 team has become a frontrunner in hiring Red Bull's aero wizard Adrian Newey for 2025, according to reports. The car designer will leave the Austrian team in March 2025 but will decide his future before the end of the 2024 F1 season.
On May 1, 2024, Red Bull officially announced that Adrian Newey would part ways with the team after 19 long and successful years. The defending world champions also mentioned that effective immediately, he would stop working on the day-to-day operations of the F1 team and would focus on Red Bull's upcoming RB17 supercar. Once the supercar's development is complete, he would leave the team altogether.
Right after this announcement, reports emerged about different teams luring Adrian Newey to join them in the future. In the beginning, it was rumored that Ferrari, McLaren, and even Mercedes were after the car designer. According to a recent report by Autosport, however, Aston Martin was also in advanced talks with the Brit.
As per the report, Newey went on a secret tour of Aston Martin's new factory at Silverstone in June, where he also discussed a contract with them. However, nothing has been signed by either Newey or Aston Martin at the moment.
The report also states that the severance package that Adrian Newey received from Red Bull has a special clause that prevents him from revealing his future intentions. There is a clause in the package that does not allow the aero wizard to reveal his future moves before September. Hence, nothing has been confirmed by the Brit or any other team.
F1 pundit explores Adrian Newey's secret Aston Martin factory visit
Sky Sports F1 pundit Craig Slater recently talked about Adrian Newey's quiet visit to Aston Martin's factory at Silverstone in June 2024.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he explained how the aero wizard secretly visited the factory and how the team kept the staff and media away from the vicinity during Newey's tour. He gave details of how the Red Bull car designer met with Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll and talked about his personal demands with him.
"Newey did indeed visit the Aston Martin factory a couple of weeks ago. This was almost a behind-closed-doors event. Aston Martin kept staff away, they did not want news of this visit leaking out," Slater said.
"Newey toured the campus, met with Lawrence Stroll, the team owner, and personal terms have been discussed. My understanding is Aston Martin can meet Newey's personal demands, although they are very considerable indeed," he further added.
As of now, Aston Martin is struggling in the 2024 F1 season. They are fifth in the constructors' championship with only 58 points.
