Star McLaren driver Lando Norris suggested that Red Bull is currently not in the fight for the Formula 1 World Constructors' Championship. He identified Ferrari as the main rival for their title bid.
Following the ninth round of the season in Montreal, Red Bull leads the Constructor's Standings with 301 points, followed by Ferrari at 252 and McLaren with 212. In the last four races, however, the Woking-based squad has scored the most points.
Norris believes McLaren has the most consistent and least error-prone driver lineup among all the teams. He is confident that he and Oscar Piastri can challenge old rivals Ferrari for this year's Constructors' Championship.
"To be honest, at the minute, I think between Ferrari and us, Yeah, so we'll keep pushing and I think that's one of our biggest strengths at the minute. We have two drivers as McLaren who are up there not making mistakes and getting pretty much everything out of the car every single weekend," Norris said in the post-race press conference (via FIA).
The British driver also emphasized why he believes Red Bull is not in the fight currently. He suggested that McLaren benefits from having two drivers maximizing their chances every weekend, whereas Max Verstappen does the heavy lifting for Red Bull.
"But in the end of the day, I think two is going to be better than one, you know, in Max's case. So we're doing a good job, but we still need to keep pushing on and try and bring more upgrades and things like that," Norris said.
Fresh off signing a two-year contract extension, Sergio Perez had a disastrous outing in Montreal. He has only managed to add four points to the team tally in the previous three races, while his teammate has scored 58 points, with two race victories.
If Perez continues to underperform, Ferrari and McLaren have a good shot at winning the Constructors' Championship.
Lando Norris looks forward to the Spanish GP
Formula 1 returns to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the Spanish GP scheduled on June 23. The 2.894-mile (4.657km) circuit has a good mix of slow and high-speed corners, providing a good read of the pecking order of the teams.
Lando Norris is excited about the event, as he reckons the upgraded MCL38 will be competitive at every track. He is also curious to see how Mercedes performs over the weekend.
"I am. I look forward to every track now because every place we seem to be performing well. Yeah, I mean, it's good to see where Mercedes are going to be, because they've clearly improved a lot. Like the last two weekends, they've been pretty close to probably being the quickest car. This weekend, they've been the quickest all weekend," Norris said in the press conference.
Norris also suggested that Mercedes' revival is an exciting prospect for the sport, as four constructors and eight cars will be in the mix for race wins every weekend.
