Carlos Sainz is having a challenging season, as he vacates his Ferrari seat for Lewis Hamilton and has yet to announce his plans for 2025. Amid ongoing negotiations with multiple teams, he acknowledged the tough landscape of the sport.
After Sergio Perez secured an extension and Mercedes showed interest in promoting Kimi Antonelli, Carlos Sainz's options for a top seat diminished. The Spaniard is reported to be in talks with Sauber and Williams, while Alpine has recently entered the fray with a renewed offer.
Carlos Sainz admitted that he has learned a lot about Formula 1 and the characters in the paddock during the silly season. He emphasized the tough nature of the sport and noted how little one can rely on the terms presented early in negotiations.
"First of all, the situation that I've been in this year has made me learn a lot about Formula 1 in general," he was quoted as saying by motorsport.com.
"By talking to teams it has kind of showed me how tough this sport is and how little sometimes you have to believe what people say at the beginning of negotiations, conversations, and mainly people," he added.
The 29-year-old Spaniard also discussed the political landscape of the sport, emphasizing the complexities involved in finalizing a deal. The silly season has left him cautious about trusting too many people in the F1 paddock. He said:
"Also to trust very little people in the paddock because it's really a very political sport. There's a lot of things like this involved, and it's made me understand it's a very tough sport in that sense and understand a better picture of Formula 1 without going too much into detail."
Carlos Sainz indicated during the Spanish GP weekend that he planned to announce his future F1 plans soon. However, he has since clarified that he will not be making a decision during the triple-header, which concludes with the British GP.
Sainz is taking his time to carefully evaluate all available options. This delay has enabled him to gain deeper insights into the future plans of the teams. He remains focused on long-term projects offered to him.
F1 insider provides update on Carlos Sainz's options
F1 correspondent Lawrence Barretto recently reported that Carlos Sainz has three options on the table - Williams, Sauber (Audi), and Alpine. Barretto added that the French team has been pursuing Sainz for months, and has recently improved their offer. Barretto indicated that the Spaniard has not yet made the decision.
"Alpine’s next task is to nail down their second seat. They are chasing Carlos Sainz, having been in talks for months, and improved their offer recently. I understand Sainz hasn’t made a call on his future yet, with three offers (the others from Williams and Sauber/Audi) on the table," he wrote on X ahead of the Austrian GP.
Sainz has previously raced for Alpine, formerly known as Renault, during the latter part of 2017 and the following season in 2018.
