It is being reported that Carlos Sainz's move to Williams F1 will be announced during the ongoing Spanish GP this weekend. The Spanish driver has been in high demand ever since he was let go by Ferrari in favor of Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season.
The 29-year-old has been rumored to join multiple teams like Audi and Mercedes on the grid for quite some time now but as per Motorsportweek, he has finally decided to join the Grove-based outfit for the upcoming years.
Williams F1 may be down in P9 in the Constructor's Championship with just two points in nine races and two Sprints thus far but they have been making the right noises ever since James Vowles joined them as the team principal in 2023.
The iconic team might also find themselves in an improved situation when the new engine regulations are introduced in the 2026 season as a customer of Mercedes, who is reportedly leading the field in terms of the development and performance of the new power units.
However, neither Carlos Sainz nor Williams has confirmed that they would be announcing the news of his arrival at the Spanish GP as of yet.
Carlos Sainz gives an update regarding his future in F1
Carlos Sainz stated that he wanted to decide his future as soon as possible, as he was too occupied with it amidst an ongoing season.
In the pre-race press conference in Barcelona, the Ferrari driver spoke about the urgency and said:
"The latest is that a decision will be taken very soon. I don't want to wait any longer. I think it's getting to a point where it's obviously taking space out of my head for quite a few weeks now and months and I think it's obviously time to make a decision. The decision will be taken soon."
When he was asked further if he had decided on a team that he wanted to join, Sainz answered in the negative despite rumors of him joining Williams, adding:
"I'm still not sure one way or another. It's still something that I'm discussing with my team and brainstorming and obviously, I need a couple of days back at home and before the Spanish Grand Prix. I've been at home, but you don't have your head in the future, you have your head in the Spanish Grand Prix.
"It's been a very hectic couple of weeks after Canada for me. So I haven't had time to really sit down and take a decision. And this is what I will target in the next few weeks."
Many drivers on the F1 grid are waiting on Carlos Sainz to decide his future team as he is the most sought-after prospect in the market in the 2024 season.
