Red Bull boss Christian Horner reveals that he had a heart-to-heart conversation with Sergio Perez about his recent form. The Mexican has been part of the team since 2021, and in 2024, his position and future with the squad are in a spot of bother.

Perez has not had the best of runs in 2024. He started the season well with a P2 finish in Bahrain. He followed it up with another P2 in Saudi Arabia, behind Max Verstappen. Since then, however, Sergio Perez has been more or less missing.

There have been a few races where he has done well, but more often than not, the gap between him and his teammate is too big.

This has become a much bigger concern right now because four teams are fighting for the top slot. We have Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari, all with race winners in their respective teams.

The drop in form has seen Sergio Perez fall to P6 in the championship, with both Mercedes drivers within touching distance of displacing him further. The drop has started to cost Red Bull, and the team is currently looking at a scenario where it loses points in the constructors championship to rivals.

Because of this, Sergio Perez's position is in danger, as Red Bull is reportedly evaluating whether the Mexican needs to be replaced. In between all of this, Christian Horner was questioned by Sky Sports F1 about the driver, to which he revealed he'd had a heart-to-heart conversation with Sergio at his home.

He said:

“We have a really open relationship. I sat down with him in the kitchen at my house and said, ‘Come on, what’s going on? Is there something else?’ and he was like ‘No, I think I’m just overthinking things a bit too much’."

Horner added:

“I think almost ignoring what’s going on on the other side of the garage will do him a favour, which is the approach that he’s taking now, just focusing on his own performance.”

Sergio Perez is in a bit of a head spin: Red Bull boss

Horner reinforced that everyone at Red Bull wants Sergio Perez to realize his potential and show how good he can be. The team principal felt that there was an element of the Mexican being in too much of a head spin and focusing a lot more on what Max Verstappen on the other side of the garage was doing.

Horner said:

“We all want Checo to realise the potential that he did in the first four or five races and we know he’s capable of that – that’s why we took up the option early on him for next year to try and settle him.”

He added:

“I think he’s been in a bit of a head spin the last few races, but hopefully, today were the signs that he’s coming out of that and the team are working very hard with him to support him and make sure that he does refind his form because we desperately need it.”

Sergio Perez has started the F1 Hungarian GP well. If he can continue this level of performance until the end of the weekend, then we're looking at a very strong result from the driver.
