F1 world champion Damon Hill has criticized Aston Martin F1 driver Fernando Alonso for confronting Liam Lawson in parc ferme during the 2024 US Grand Prix last weekend. The two-time world champion had a disappointing outing at the Circuit of the Americas, failing to finish with points in either the Sprint or the main race, and languished outside the top 10.
Throughout the weekend, Alonso battled Visa Cash App RB driver Lawson who overtook the Spanish driver during the Sprint race on Saturday. He confronted the rookie in parc ferme about the incident. Lawson later spoke with ESPN about the heated exchange.
"He was really upset, I'm not sure why, we were racing for P16 and I don't know why he was so upset," Lawson said. "Yeah, I don't know. It is what it is. Hopefully, he can get over it and we'll move forward. I understand he had a pretty horrible race so I can understand why he's upset. But if I did anything wrong I'd have got a penalty."
Alonso's behavior did not sit well with 1996 world champion Damon Hill, who on his Instagram story reposted Lawson's comments and expressed disappointment:
"Come on Fernando Alonso, you're better than that."
Alonso said as per F1 that it was a tough race for the team, as he couldn't capitalize on his starting position of P7 and fell back at the start of the race to finish P13.
Fernando Alonso analyzes his US GP main race on Sunday
43-year-old Aston Martin F1 driver Fernando Alonso discussed his 2024 US GP main race and said (via F1):
"It was a tough race for us today and we dropped back a few places from our starting position. I think we outperformed the car’s natural position in Qualifying and we knew it would be an uphill battle to stay inside the top ten. It’s been a difficult weekend and we have lots to analyse over the next few days to get better for Mexico."
Alonso's teammate Lance Stroll expressed a similar sentiment:
"We lacked pace compared to the other cars today. I had a bit of messy restart with a snap at Turn 10 but I think that, even without that snap, the result would have been the same. The car didn’t have the performance for us to fight for positions."
Aston Martin was among the teams to have brought the most upgrades to the Circuit of the Americas.
