F1 pundit Tom Coronel claimed that Visa Cash App RB driver Daniel Ricciardo should think about retiring at the end of the 2024 season and look for an alternative career in commentary. The Aussie driver has been in the firing line since the beginning of the season, given his slow start to the season as compared to his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda.
Although his performances and results have picked up in the last eight races and he even found himself in contention to potentially replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull, he remains out of contract for the 2025 season.
Speaking with "Formule1.nl", Coronel was not impressed with Daniel Ricciardo's 2024 season and gave a brutal verdict regarding his F1 career. He said ("via PlanetF1"):
“A few years ago, when Daniel Ricciardo left Red Bull and went for the money at Renault, I already knew it. He chose the dough and not his racing heart. It’s a nice story, the Ricciardo 2.0 who has learnt from his mistakes – blah, blah, blah – but he just doesn’t get it anymore," Coronel said.
"He didn’t succeed at McLaren, he didn’t succeed at AlphaTauri and he’s never going to succeed again. Be honest with yourself," he added.
The Dutchman even suggested an alternative career choice for the RB driver and added:
“He is an ideal motorsport co-commentator or analyst. He is funny, has flair, and can handle anything well. Go and enjoy that, but stop doing Formula 1."
"And at a training team, he has no business at all anyway. Formula 1 is the class for the world’s top-20 drivers and he hasn’t been part of that for a long time,” Coronel opined.
Daniel Ricciardo reflects on the 'crazy world' of F1
Visa Cash App RB driver Daniel Ricciardo stated that he enjoyed the 'crazy' world of F1 despite the uncertainty and stress attached to it.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with "Motorsport" earlier this month, the eight-time race winner reflected on his time off last year and returning mid-season in 2023:
"It is a funny business. And having the time off last year allowed me to come back into this business, and just handle these things much better. I laugh about it a little bit. I weirdly enjoy it. Is it a bit stressful? Yes. But you know what? It's a crazy world, it's a crazy sport, and it's fun to be a part of it. There is pressure on a lot of us and there are moments where we're going to have to see if we can withstand that pressure. And that's something I'm excited to see if I can do," Ricciardo said.
Daniel Ricciardo is currently P13 in the driver's championship with 12 points from 14 races and three sprints thus far. His standout performances for this year remain his P4 in the Miami Sprint race and resilient drives in Canada, Austria, and Spa.
