Formula 1 fans were sent into a frenzy after a story from Lewis Hamilton's engineer Michael Sansoni surfaced online. Sansoni and Bono were seen celebrating Hamilton's Silverstone Grand Prix victory in the story.
It was a long wait for his enthusiasts, but Lewis Hamilton's faithful basked in the glory after the 39-year-old driver returned to the top of the grid. After nearly two seasons and a half, Hamilton finally emerged victorious in a Formula 1 race.
The Mercedes legend got the better of reigning three-time World Champion Max Verstappen in Silverstone to once again celebrate a race win in front of his iconic home crowd. Hamilton's win in the British Grand Prix was the ninth of his career at Silverstone, giving him the most number of wins on a single circuit, a record he previously shared with Michael Schumacher.
Hamilton also secured his 104th career victory, becoming the first driver to win a Formula 1 race after 300 starts. The Briton is also the first driver to win an F1 race in 16 different seasons.
While these records were remarkable, Mercedes engineer Michael Sansoni generated a whirlwind of rumors with his latest Instagram story. Following the win, Sansoni shared an image of himself along with Bono, Hamilton's race engineer. The duo was posing with their race-win trophies, and a caption that accompanied the image, read:
"Team Red 44"
This led fans to speculate whether both Sansoni and Bono are set to accompany Lewis Hamilton when the Brit joins Ferrari in 2025. One user wrote:
"Does this mean they're coming to Ferrari?"
A second user added:
"Would love to see Bono & Lewis team up in Ferrari!!!"
Expressing similar sentiments, a third fan commented:
"Who doesn’t like working with legends?"
However, some fans were quick to point out what Samsoni's caption actually referred to. In reality, Mercedes recognizes it's two drivers, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, as Team Blue and Team Red respectively.
Highlighting this fact, one user commented:
"Don't want to crush your hopes and dreams, but Goerge is Team Blue and Lewis is Team Red in Mercedes."
"Bono’s contract has a no-poaching clause so as it stands he can’t move with Lewis to another team," another fan commented.
Emotional Lewis Hamilton overjoyed following the Silverstone win
Hamilton's win at Silverstone was a moment of immense emotion and joy for the driver. Asked about his emotions post-race, Hamilton said (via Formula 1):
"I can’t stop crying! It’s been since 2021, every day getting up, trying to fight, to train, to put my mind to the task and work as hard as I can with this amazing team.
Reflecting on his last race at the British Grand Prix with Mercedes, he added:
"This is my last race here at the British Grand Prix with this team [before moving to Ferrari], so I wanted to win this so much for them, because I love them, I appreciate them so much, all the hard work they’ve been putting in all over these years."
Lewis Hamilton finds himself eighth in the F1 Drivers' standings following his British GP victory. He has 110 points to his name, one less than teammate George Russell.
