Fans were far from happy with Lando Norris' explanation following the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix. After the conclusion of the race, Norris emphasized how difficult it was to overtake Max Verstappen, and this was something the F1 fans did not appreciate.
The recently concluded race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya saw Verstappen claim his sixth race win of the season. With this, the Dutchman also scored a hat trick at the Spanish GP, winning the race in consecutive years since 2022.
Lando Norris, on the other hand, came home in P2, despite claiming the pole position on Saturday. For the second time in his career, the Briton failed to take advantage of his pole and succumbed to Verstappen's onslaught. Lewis Hamilton wrapped up the final podium place.
As Norris spoke about his race in a post-race interview, he emphasized the challenge Verstappen posed up ahead. He said,
"Even catching Max, you know, it's a whole another task to be able to pass him."
Fans reacted to Norris' statements and shared their disappointment. One wrote,
"I like Lando, he will win a few more races this year with that car. But the dude needs to stop acting like Max is a god who is impossible to beat. You would never hear Charles or Lewis talk like this. Accept your error, move on and act like a champion, that’s the least you can do."
Another said,
"Professional bottler and victim."
This fan questioned Norris' mentality:
"His mentality is weak, thats why its hard for him to be at the top."
"Max only got passed by George because you pushed off track and lost him his momentum," another chimed in.
One fan wrote,
"This is the worst driver I've seen in a big team."
"How? Lmao. You pushed him into the grass which made him lose the place to George. Self reflection is important," yet another fan advised Norris.
Lando Norris looks to overcome Max Verstappen and Red Bull's challenge
McLaren began to make significant progress from the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix onward, and coming into 2024, they are in a place to challenge Red Bull for supremacy in the sport.
However, Lando Norris believes going against the defending champions will not be a walk in the park (via BBC):
"We could go on and win races. I definitely think that’s possible with how the team are performing and how I’m performing," Norris said. "But we’re against one of the best drivers ever in F1 and one of the best performing teams in F1 and then you have everyone else apart from that who can easily get in the mix too."
Currently, McLaren are in P3 in the Constructors' Championship with 237 points, while Red Bull is in P1 with 330 points.
Max Verstappen leads the Drivers' Championship with 219 points, while Norris is in P3 with 150 points.
