Former F1 world champion Damon Hill reacted to Lewis Hamilton's first message as a Ferrari driver on Sunday, January 5. The seven-time F1 world champion started his tenure with the Italian team on the first day of the new year.

The British driver had announced that he would move to the Maranello-based outfit from the 2025 season, ending his 12-year stint with the Mercedes F1 team. The decision surprised everyone, given that he had signed a contract extension with the German team in August 2023 while rejecting the advances of the Prancing Horses.

In his LinkedIn post shared on January 3, Lewis Hamilton mentioned that he was excited to start his journey with Ferrari and embark on a new challenge. Damon Hill reshared Hamilton's message via his Instagram story and speculated on the seven-time champion's season with a four-word message, writing:

It has been a tough couple of years for the 39-year-old after he came agonizingly close to winning his eighth world championship in 2021.

Hamilton has only won two races in the past three seasons, all coming in 2024. He has not gelled with the current generation of cars, and many have even questioned the Italian team's decision to sign him.

Former F1 team boss questions Ferrari over Lewis Hamilton's signing

Former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan questioned Ferrari's decision to sign Lewis Hamilton and disrupt a stable driver's lineup with Carlos Sainz at Charles Leclerc.

While appearing on his Formula for Success podcast earlier this week, the 76-year-old said (as quoted by Mirror):

"I say to John Elkann, who's the chairman of that group, what the f*** was he thinking about in getting rid of Carlos when he had a very happy, friendly, structured team that knew how to work together? The drivers got on well together."

Claiming that Vasseur would have to spend time ensuring the new member acclimatizes to the team, Jordan added:

"Fred Vasseur had a real opportunity to bring this team great, great success. Now he has to start thinking about gelling and mending away, that he can get a new member of the team, egos, everything involved."

While praising Hamilton as an easygoing personality on the grid, the former F1 team boss said that getting rid of the Spaniard was 'suicidal.'

"Lewis is a particularly nice person. I'm not sure there's many nicer people on the grid than Lewis Hamilton, so I don't think he'll have a problem there. However, my FFS goes to John Elkann of Ferrari for even authorising, signing off on that deal. It was absolutely suicidal to get rid of Carlos."

The 105-time race winner would be joining Ferrari on a multi-year deal that will see him race for them until the end of the 2026 season, at least. On the other hand, Carlos Sainz will find a new home again in England as he sets his mind to taking Williams F1 further ahead on the grid.
