F1 pundit Jolyon Palmer claimed that Lando Norris made an 'interesting' choice by extending his deal with McLaren and not joining Max Verstappen at Red Bull.
The British driver is currently one of the best drivers on the grid and was touted to be in the running for a seat alongside the three-time world champion. However, Norris and McLaren decided to extend their relationship until the end of 2026 at least last winter.
In his column for F1.com, Jolyon Palmer backed Lando Norris's decision to stay at the Woking-based team despite Red Bull being a tempting offer owing to their dominance. He wrote:
“He committed his future to McLaren over the winter, which is an interesting choice given the turmoil in the driver market right now. With seats open at both Red Bull and Mercedes, time will tell if that is the smart move, but with the way that McLaren are improving right now there aren’t many better places to be in the short term."
“As tempting as a Red Bull seat would be, the way that Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and Sergio Perez have been annihilated by Verstappen would make anyone think twice about joining a team so galvanised around a superstar driver.”
Lando Norris chimes in on Max Verstappen's dominance affecting F1
Lando Norris stated that Max Verstappen's dominance would be 'turning off' the F1 fans from tuning in to watch every single race given the lack of competition.
As quoted by Press Association, the McLaren driver reflected:
“It is frustrating for people watching but it has always been like this. Now, we are seeing more dominance than ever, so it is never going to be the best to watch and the only exciting races have been the ones that Max is not in.”
“If you see the same driver winning every single time without a fight then of course it does start to become boring and that is obvious."
Despite rumors of an internal power struggle at Red Bull in 2024, it looks highly unlikely that Max Verstappen's dominance will be affected this year or in 2025 as he still has the best car on the grid.
Lando Norris has looked like one of the best candidates to challenge the Dutchman as was recently evident in China, as he finished P2 behind the Red Bull driver.
