F1 analyst Peter Windsor has claimed that Red Bull engineer Adrian Newey has rejected a big money offer from Aston Martin.
Ever since the reports of Red Bull's chief technical officer Newey's departure from the team surfaced online, numerous rumors regarding the Briton's next likely destination have run rampant. The 65-year-old engineering maestro has been linked to many F1 outfits such as Mercedes, Ferrari, and Aston Martin.
While either of Mercedes or Ferrari seems to be an ideal next destination for Newey, Peter Windsor, F1 journalist and former team manager at Williams, has claimed that the Briton rejected offers from Aston Martin. Speaking on a recent live stream on his YouTube channel, Windsor said:
"Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin would all want Adrian Newey, for sure."
"My understanding is that already there has been offered a lot of money by Aramco [Aston Martin title sponsors] and Aston therefore, and he’s turned it down. That’s my understanding of what the Aston situation is."
Suggesting that monetary gain may not be the primary motivator for Newey, Windsor added:
"And it doesn’t surprise me because I don’t think he needs the money. I don’t think money is a motivation for Adrian."
Fernando Alonso's renewal with Aston Martin was based around the arrival of Adrian Newey, claims Windsor
Alonso, 42 and the oldest driver on the grid, signed a two-year contract extension with the Silverstone-based outfit earlier this season. The Spaniard, who had joined Aston Martin last season, will continue driving for the team until 2026 .
According to Peter Windsor, a key component behind Fernando Alonso's extension with Aston Martin was the potential arrival of Newey. Highlighting the allure of joining forces with Newey for Alonso and other drivers, Windsor said:
"He (Alonso) has got good backing there, the Strolls like him, he’s doing a great job for Lance (Stroll) sort of and it’s going to get better and better – and they’ve got great facilities. Of course, they’d all want to have Adrian Newey, that’s a point that needs to be made."
After finding success with McLaren and Williams, Adrian Newey jumped ships to Red Bull Racing in 2006. The Briton has since gone on to carve a fabled legacy for himself in the sport, often referred to as the greatest engineer in Formula 1 history. He has won 13 Drivers' Championships and 12 Constructors' titles in his career.
