Several recent reports suggest that F1 has asked automotive giant General Motors about their interests in partnering with teams other than Andretti's. As the 2026 F1 season comes to a close, there are a few new teams that want to enter F1. Andretti's team was the first to get approved by the FIA and will soon start discussions with FOM.
Back in January, Mario Andretti announced that they would be teaming up with Cadillac, an automotive company that comes under General Motors. The massive partnership meant that the former American driver now had major backing from one of the biggest car companies in the US, drastically increasing their chances of making headway into the sport.
Despite the strong duo, the entrant had to go back and forth with the sport's seniors and the FIA to get a seat at the table. Finally, a few weeks ago, the FIA finally accepted Andretti-Cadillac's expression of interest in joining the grid. However, they now have to go through FOM.
According to reports from AP News, F1 seniors have asked General Motors if they would want to partner with anyone other than Andretti. This information was leaked by three different people with direct knowledge of the matter. This is quite massive news if it is true, since the seniors of the sport are particularly against Andretti joining the grid.
Only time will tell how the Andretti saga will pan out and whether he will be able to get a green light from the FOM to finally start developing a car for the future.
FIA's statement approving Andretti F1 team
The FIA recently approved Andretti's team to join the grid. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem recently explained how the governing body went through the expression of interest applications from the team carefully and approved them accordingly. He said:
"The FIA was very clear in establishing stringent criteria for entry from the outset of the Expressions of Interest procedure," Ben Sulayem said. "Our objective, after rigorous due diligence during the application phase, was to only approve prospective entries which satisfied the set criteria and illustrated that they would add value to the sport."
He added:
"The FIA is obliged to approve applications that comply with the Expressions of Interests application requirements and we have adhered to that procedure in deciding that Andretti Formula Racing LLC’s application would proceed to the next stage of the application process. In taking that decision, the FIA is acting in accordance with EU directives on motor sport participation and development."
This was a massive step forward for the American entrant, as they now have to continue the talks with the FOM to confirm their place on the F1 grid.
