F1 is reportedly planning to change the points system of a Grand Prix.
In every F1 race, drivers and teams receive a certain amount of championship points based on where they finish. These points determine their position on the championship table and which team or driver would win the title at the end of a season.
For several years up until now, the top 10 drivers who finish a race receive championship points. The number of championship points offered to each driver from first to 10th was set by the sport back in 2010. The current point system, however, could soon change.
According to reports from Motorsport.com, the FIA and F1 would join all 10 teams for a regular F1 commission meeting in Geneva to discuss various matters about the sport. One of them would include whether F1's points system should be increased from the top 10 to the top 12 drivers.
The report further states that the new points system could get the green light even if six of the 10 teams agree with it.
The new point system won't change the number of points given to the first seven drivers but would extend to the driver finishing a race in P12. This was particularly curated to prevent any changes in the championship battles at the top of the table as well as allow backmarker teams to score points.
Below is a chart showing what the current and proposed point system would look like:
All previous point systems implemented in F1
This is not the first time a new points system has been proposed. Ever since the sport's inception in 1950, drivers used to receive a point for the drivers' championship for four of their best finishes in a season. The championship points system was 8/6/4/3/2. This system, where only a driver's best finish was counted for the drivers' championship went on till 1990.
In 1991, the sport introduced a new system of giving points to six drivers in a 10/6/4/3/2/1 system. In addition, all the points scored by that driver were counted in the drivers' championship. In 2003, it was revised to the first eight drivers in a 10/8/6/5/4/3/2/1 system.
In 2010, another change was made, offering points to the first 10 drivers in a 25/18/15/12/10/8/6/4/2/1 system. This is the current points system that is still used in the 2024 season.
