Fernando Alonso believes Max Verstappen will win the 2024 Formula 1 Championship. With three consecutive victories in three years, Verstappen is currently the defending champion, and Alonso believes the Dutchman is headed for a fourth.
Verstappen's onslaught began in 2021 when he outperformed Lewis Hamilton to claim his first F1 championship. Thanks to a couple of mighty cars, the Dutch driver brought more destruction in the following seasons.
In 2022, the 26-year-old claimed 15 wins in 22 races, and in 2023, the number was even higher. Verstappen won a staggering 19 races in the entire season, surpassing his previous record. As things stand, the Hasselt-born driver is on his way to claim his fourth title win.
"There is no World Cup, this will be Max Verstappen's fourth title. No one has a choice," said Alonso as per EFE news agency.
As of now, Verstappen has six wins to his tally out of nine races in the 2024 season. Meanwhile, the likes of Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, and Lando Norris have just one win each.
Verstappen sits comfortably in P1, with 194 points to his name. With 138 points, Leclerc is in P2, and Norris is in P3 with 131 points. Although there has been resistance from rivals, unlike the last two years, Alonso believes that they will not be enough to stop Verstappen in the coming days.
Alonso: 'Despite McLaren and Ferrari resistance, Verstappen has the upper hand'
Following their early setbacks in the previous two years, McLaren and Ferrari have been incredibly impressive this season.
The Prancing Horse has achieved two victories, one pole position, and nine podium finishes thus far. On the other hand, the Papayas have a win and six podium finishes to their tally. Interestingly, reports have revealed that the aforementioned teams are gearing up to bring more upgrades to their SF-24 and MCL38, respectively.
Despite that, Fernando Alonso believes Max Verstappen and Red Bull will be unstoppable. Verstappen and his team are already in the lead; a few more wins will cement a title triumph until there is a dramatic upset.
"There will be more race winners: McLaren is strong, Ferrari in many races seems to also have the best car... But, throughout the 24 races, the ones who are going to make the least mistakes are Verstappen and Red Bull," Alonso said.
