Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur compared their future driver Lewis Hamilton's performance with his current teammate, George Russell. He foresees a positive change within the Italian team upon his arrival in the 2025 F1 season.
Hamilton signed with Ferrari earlier this season and will replace Carlos Sainz within the team in 2025. His performance looks strong in his final season with Mercedes. He won his first race since the 2021 season in Britain, which was a record-extending 104th win. Moreover, after George Russell was disqualified from Belgium, Hamilton was promoted as the race winner, marking his second win of the season.
Analyzing his performance, Ferrari's Frederic Vasseur said that Lewis Hamilton would bring a positive aspect to the team. He also mentioned that he has scored more points for the team than his teammate.
"We certainly know the positive aspects of Lewis' arrival, such as his great experience," he told Sky Italia. "Everyone since the beginning of the season has said that Russell is faster than him, but at the moment he is the one who has brought more points to Mercedes. So in terms of efficiency, I think he is a good point of reference."
The 39-year-old also shed some light on Mercedes' performance later in this season.
"We've just got to keep pushing": Lewis Hamilton on Mercedes' performance in the remaining 2024 F1 season
The Brackley-based team had a disappointing start to the season. The W15 was not capable enough to battle with the teams on the top of the championship. However, they gained marginal performance after the Monaco Grand Prix.
Russell brought in the team's first win of the season in Austria, after which Hamilton won at Silverstone. The Belgian Grand Prix marked the team's first 1–2 finish since 2022; however, Russell was disqualified because of an underweight car.
While these race finishes have been positive for the team, Lewis Hamilton does not feel that they will be able to get into a potential championship battle.
"Uh, no," Lewis Hamilton said when asked about a potential title fight later in 2024 by Guenther Steiner.
"I mean, if we can continue these kind of performances, we've had the last few races, which has been fantastic I think. Uh if we can start a weekends off a little bit better. Hopefully, we can continue. I think obviously the McLaren was very strong today, but we were just a bit further ahead early on. Um, but yeah, we just got to keep pushing."
Mercedes (266 points) currently sits in fourth place in the Constructors' Championship. If their performance continues to improve, they can get into a battle with Ferrari (345) for third place later in the season.
