FIA boss ‘horrified’ by the events at the Baja California rally: Exploring what happened

Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed his shock at reports of a gunfight at a rally in Mexico's Baja California.

Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) president Mohammed ben Sulayem has expressed his shock at reports of a gunfight at an off-road vehicle rally in Mexico's Baja California.

According to various reports, a gunfight at the event in Baja California state has left 10 people dead (via CBS) and another 10 wounded. Videos of heavy shooting at the rally have been doing the rounds on social media.

It has been reported that the shooting, which took place on Saturday, May 20, saw gunmen in one vehicle open fire on people and vehicles at the rally. With there being evidence of crossfire, the state prosecutor's office has suggested that it could be a confrontation between organized crime groups. However, no group has claimed responsibility yet.

Ben Sulayem took to social media and stated that he was horrified by the events, calling it "senseless violence." He tweeted:

"I am horrified by the reports of an appalling attack at the Baja California Rally in Mexico. Motor sport events should be safe places for participants and spectators. On behalf of the whole FIA family our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this senseless violence."

The Baja California region is famous for the annual Baja 1000 off-road rally. This year, it has been scheduled to be held from November 13-18. In fact, Formula 1 stars like F1 champions Jenson Button and Mario Andretti have also taken part in the event over the years.


FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem accused of sexism and bullying

FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem is facing allegations of sexism and bullying.

A former interim secretary general for motorsport, Shaila-Ann Rao, who abruptly left her role last December, has alleged numerous instances of sexist behavior prior by the 61-year-old.

The Telegraph, in a recent report, brought to light the various accusations leveled at Ben Sulayem. The report also states that her claims were never investigated.

The FIA, however, has stated that "due process followed" following the sexism allegations. Commenting on the letter, Rao’s allegations of sexism and whether the complaints were followed up, a spokesperson said (via Sky Sports):

“The FIA takes allegations of abuse very seriously and addresses all complaints using robust and clear procedures. With regards to the specific allegations surrounding Shaila-Ann Rao, due process was followed, with an amicable negotiation conducted by the President of the Senate and as such, no referrals were made to the Ethics Committee.”

They added:

“As previously stated, both parties agreed she would leave her position in November 2022 and mutual privacy terms were agreed as is common business practice. With regards to the other allegations, there have been no complaints received against the President.”
