Sauber signed former Ferrari Head of Race Strategy and Sporting Director Inaki Rueda where he will be once again working as the sporting director. He worked with the Scuderia for close to a decade before being replaced by Ravin Jain in 2023.
Rueda will be reunited with Mattia Binotto at Sauber, the latter working as the CTO. The team is currently undergoing managerial changes and Rueda's signing is a part of the same. He has ample experience working in Formula 1. He previously worked with Lotus F1 and then moved to the Scuderia in 2014. He worked there as the head of strategy before being promoted as the sporting director. However, he was replaced prior to the start of the 2023 season once Binotto left and Frederic Vasseur became the team principal.
"Rueda brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously held senior positions at Jordan Grand Prix, Renault, Lotus F1 Team, and most recently, Scuderia Ferrari, where he was promoted to Sporting Director in 2021. In his new position, Rueda will be responsible for overseeing all sporting activities, managing the relationship with FIA and all regulations matters trackside," Sauber said in a team statement.
Sauber is seemingly the weakest team on the grid in the current season. Having scored no points so far, they sit at the back of the grid. However, they are prepared to be taken over by Audi in the 2026 season, and the German brand is seemingly focused on building a strong team.
Meanwhile, Ferrari is back in contention for the championship in the current season.
Ferrari back in contention to win long-awaited World Championship
Ferrari last won a title in the 2008 season with Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen bringing their record-extending 16th constructors' title. However, the team is still waiting for their 17th. Although they came close to winning on several occasions, difficult circumstances kept the title away.
The 2024 season has once again given the team the opportunity to bring the celebrations back at Maranello. After their consecutive victories in Austin and Mexico City, they stand second in the championship, only 29 points away from McLaren who are in the lead.
While the latter has delivered a promising car in the later part of the season, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz's pace in both the American races was extremely competitive. Moreover, they made relatively fewer driving errors (except for Leclerc's race-threatening oversteer in the final laps at Mexico).
Heading into the final four races of the 2024 F1 season, the competition is fierce. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen still leads the Drivers' Championship, with Lando Norris closing in on him.
