Formula E co-founder Alberto Longo has publicly asked Red Bull driver Sergio Perez to race in the electric racing series. Many ex-F1 drivers including Lucas di Grassi, Jean-Éric Vergne, Stoffel Vandoorne, Sébastian Buemi, and Nyck de Vries, among others, will be racing in Formula E in 2024.
Longo also wants the Mexican to join the Formula E grid and race in the future. Taking a light jibe at F1, he told AS media (via Fox Sports) that Sergio Perez should race in an actual competitive racing series.
Furthermore, Longo openly claimed that Formula E can be Perez's home, and that the 33-year-old would be welcomed with open arms if he decided to jump ship. He said:
"I constantly talk to Checo and I hope he makes a leap to the real competition. Formula E is your home, it will have its doors open and it is welcome."
Up until now, Sergio Perez's entire career has been centered around racing in Formula 1. He started karting at the age of six and went through the junior series to finally race in the top single-seater event. As of now, no reports firmly suggest that the Mexican has any plans to move away from F1.
F1 pundit feels Sergio Perez could soon feel the pressure from rival teams
F1 pundit Karun Chandhok reckons Sergio Perez could feel the heat in the 2024 F1 season if other teams start ramping up their performance. Checo was still ahead of most of the Red Bulls' rivals since they were miles behind the Austrian-British team.
However, this might not be the case in 2024. Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Chandhok said last month (53:47):
"I think he benefitted from the fact that the opposition was that far behind in terms of pure pace. When we start to see this convergence, we inevitably get with stable rules, I think the pressure will ramp up on that second Red Bull to be outperforming the Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, Asto, maybe the Alpine and all these people."
The Mexican is currently racing for Red Bull but is struggling to keep up with his teammate Max Verstappen, who is currently dominating the field and winning most of the races. In 2023, Perez secured second place in the drivers' championship but was miles away from Verstappen.
Perez finished 290 points behind the Dutchman and 51 points ahead of third-placed Lewis Hamilton. Since Red Bull has a sister team on the grid, Checo could feel the pressure of getting replaced if he underperforms.
