F1 fans reacted to Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur taking a jibe at the team's former team boss Mattia Binotto over a disagreement regarding signing Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion will soon move to Ferrari after the year ends.
When the news of Hamilton moving to Ferrari broke at the start of 2024, the entire F1 space and motorsport industry in general was shocked. Ferrari has approached Lewis Hamilton in the past, but the British F1 driver was committed to writing history with Mercedes.
When former Ferrari team boss, Mattia Binotto was asked whether he would have hired Hamilton, he told Corriere della Sera:
"I wouldn't have taken him. But he did very well to go, I agree with his decision," (via formulapassion.it)
In response to this, Frederic Vasseur joked that the seven-time world champion would not have gone to Sauber, the team that Mattia Binotto is currently leading as a COO and CTO. He then addressed the huge number of opinions that have been shared after the team hired Hamilton. Vasseur further fired shots and said that when he was at Sauber himself, he did not talk about Ferrari and only focused on the job at hand.
"And I'm not sure that Hamilton would have gone to Sauber (laughs). I'm happy that many have time to comment on our choices, I'm focused on our work, after all when I was at Sauber I didn't talk about Ferrari." Vasseur said.
Many F1 fans reacted to Fred Vasseur's comments and joked about how he made fun of Mattia Binotto. One added that Hamilton would not have joined Ferrari had Binotto been in the team.
"Ouch Fred absolutely spanked Mattia in that statement," a fan wrote.
"Lewis wouldn’t have joined Ferrari if Mattia was still there lol," another added.
"Gotta say, Fred is quite a cool character," someone wrote.
Some fans made hilarious memes of Fred Vasseur, praising his response and saying that he was 'cooking.' One fan wrote that Lewis Hamilton would perform great in Ferrari and prove everyone wrong, while another follower mentioned how Vasseur and Hamilton have a good relationship.
"HE’S COOKING FOR REAL!!" a follower added.
"Most of them underestimating Lewis and he will prove what he is capable of yet another time!" another penned.
"Love Fred, and it’s cool that him and Lewis seen tight, after all Fred was at McLaren," one pointed out.
